MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

As some of you may recall, our last contact with the UKCP suggested that, while the MIIPC had met acceptable standards for UKCP recognition, there were problems relating to both the staffing and duration of the existing MSc. course. However, the MSc. in Counselling and Psychotherapy is due for re-validation this year, which provides an excellent opportunity for restructuring the course.

One outcome of which is hoped for is that the course will then be able to provide a route which will comply with UKCP conditions. There has also been major restructuring within the Faculty itself, and it now seems that the University is keen to address such issues as were raised. MIIPC Committee Members are currently working with the University team and local clinicians in an effort to ensure that such criteria will be met, and an opportunity created by which existing Graduates may, with some further University based training, obtain UKCP recognition.

Until it is clear as to whether the University will be able to resource such a change and meet such standards, it seems preferable to suspend further recruitment and/or subscription to the MIIPC until revalidation has taken place. The Committee is cautiously optimistic regarding the likely outcome of this exercise, and will, of course, endeavour to keep Members informed regarding any future developments.
