MESSAGE FROM VICE CHAIR

October 2008

Dear Colleague,

I wish to update you on the progress of the Midlands Institute for Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy (MIIPC).

You will be aware that the MIIPC was spawned in 1999 from an alumni group, made up of graduates from the Masters course at the then University of Central England. (Now called Birmingham City University or BCU). The principle purpose for creating MIIPC was to provide a regional (if not national) home for those who had an interest in all matters relating to Integrative Psychology and Pyschotherapy.  Also, to work toward obtaining “sponsoring organisational” status within the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).  By obtaining this status MIIPC would be able to recommend UKCP Registration to members who fulfill the necessary requirements.

We started an application to UKCP in 2004 and the following year we were accepted into the general membership of UKCP.  We immediately made an application to the Humanistic and Integrative Section (HIPS) from where we could obtain sponsoring organisational status.  This application was rejected on the grounds that the MSc course, run at that time through the UCE along with the training personnel associated with the course did not meet UKCP minimum standards.  In November 2007 the committee decided to suspend all activities within the MIIPC until we felt that the BCU had made a full commitment to the necessary changes, in order to meet the standards and support our re-application to the UKCP.

I am very pleased to inform you that the BCU have fully embraced this situation and have undertaken considerable changes in relation to this course.  The University is now offering a complete re-worked, 4-year postgraduate MSc course, (first intake from October 2008).  The very capable and experienced Marion Crowley will run this course.  I feel confident that this course will be wholly acceptable to the UKCP.

It now remains for the MIIPC to do its part, for which most of the necessary ground work has been done.  However, the committee has decided that we really need some “new blood” to help us move forward. Specifically, I am asking if any of our members would be prepared to serve on the committee. Such positions do not have to be onerous or time consuming. There are several positions on the committee, which we hope to fill but the most pressing positions are;

 ·         Membership Secretary

·         Events Organiser

·         Communications Officer

·         Treasurer

Any support you could offer at this stage would be greatly appreciated.  If you would like any further information please contact me direct on tim.young@zen.co.uk or telephone: (01905) 354819.

There will be an Annual General Meeting for MIIPC at the BCU on Monday 24th November 2008 at 7pm (full details will be posted on this website) when we hope to recruit to the vacant committee positions.

I genuinely believe we now have a very real opportunity to achieve our goal of UKCP sponsoring organisational status.  We will keep you informed of any further developments.
